I am truly SO pleased to share with y'all ... Our dry well & french drains as approved by the Parks Department were installed last week! Everything looks like it is working well.

We as a community did something pretty amazing. We as a community saw a problem, found a solution and worked through all the red tape that is the Parks Department, and working with OSA who at the time was a brand new nonprofit with a new executive director.

DRAINAGE PROJECT BEGINS TOMORROW

The Big Run at McCarren Dog Run will be CLOSEDstarting on Monday 10/17/11 10 am until the project is completed. Theproject is expected to be completed on no later than Friday 10/21.

Please note occasionally the work the contractor does will cause excessive dust to be flying around.

Additionally during this time, dogswill be using the Small Dog Run. Please be considerate of others. Not allsmall dogs get along with big dogs. And not all big dogs are good withsmall dogs. Talk toeach other, let people know if your dog(s) has issue ie. doesn't getalong with small fluffy dogs when one is about to enter the run. Small run can get pretty crowd so be aware of your dog and the others.

Why is the Big Run Locked?

Hello Dog Community,

I want to first apologize for any inconvenience closing the dog run
this evening and tomorrow morning has caused. Hopefully you all saw the
progress that was made with the big dig. The contractor made the decision to
lock the dog run because the dumpster company was late on delivering
our dumpster and feared all the dogs in the run would flatten the mounds.

Since the dumpster has arrived, hopefully we will open the run
tomorrow evening for use.

During this time, dogs will all be using the Small Dog Run. Please be
considerate of others. Not all small dogs get along with big dogs. And
not all big dogs are good with small dogs. Talk to each other, let people
know if your dog(s) has issue ie. doesn't get along with small fluffy dogs
when one is about to enter the run. Small run can get pretty crowd so be
aware of your dog and the others.

Let the Digging Begin

Yup, you read that correctly, "Let the Digging Begin." Thank you all for making the first phase of the Drainage Project possible.

The contractor will begin digging out the Big Dog Run on Tuesday 10/ 11 approx. 10 am.

During the digging the gate on the corner of Driggs & Union will be OPEN. Did you read that, the gate will be OPEN. I would recommend NOT using the Big Dog Run during the dig out period.

You can still use the run during the morning before 9 am and after 5 pm on the days of the dig out.

The contractor will be digging Tuesday 10/11 from approx. 10 am to 5 pm, Wednesday 10/12 9 am to 5 pm, Thursday 10/13 9 am to 5 pm and possibly Friday.

How did we do?

I know I have said it before but y'all amaze me, you really just amaze me. How did we do?

We met our goal of raising $1000 for the matching grant from Must Luv Dogs/Happy Dogs www.mustluvdogs.com. We raised the $1,500 by midnight, Sunday, October 2.

But wait it didn't stop there, you kept giving. I got paypal notifications, I got emails, I got calls, people gave me money on the street, they left money at PS9 and Must Luv Dogs/Happy Dogs, I met people at the Dog Run in the morning and evening. With all that generosity, I was speechless and a little teary.

It didn't STOP with those donations, then Must Luv Dogs/Happy Dogs committed to up to a total of $2,500 to support our dog run drainage project (including their original matching gift). This is truly amazing! Thank you Must Luv Dogs/Happy Dogs for being a great neighbor.

We (Billy, Angela and I) are so touched how y'all responded to our plea. It was looking pretty dark last week so your support was just overwhelming. Thank you SO much for showing us that you want drainage in McCarren.

We raised ALL money ... did you hear that We raised ALL the money for the dig out portion of the project. Not just the money for the challenge grant BUT all the money need for this phrase of the project. We raised over $4,000 to cover the dig out.

So what happens NEXT, the contractor digs out the dog run this is scheduled to happen next week, check the website, signs or email for the exact day. During this time we ask that we try not to use the run, Dogs will be able to use the run during the morning, late afternoon and evening but probably from 10 to 4 will be off limits.

Once the RUN IS DUG OUT which should take few days, then the contractor will start installation of the drainage. Please NOTE during this phase, the big dog run will be CLOSED, the gate will be LOCKED and only the contractor will have access. This will last about 5 days. The small dog run will be a shared area for all dogs during this time. Once the drainage is installed, the Parks Department will be bring fresh, clean wood chips. After those are down, McCarren Dog Run will be open for business again!

As the dates get confirmed, I will email, post on the web and run. Please help spread the word. Send this email to your dog friends in North Brooklyn.

Good evening Dog Run Users,

Did you know that we started this project over 2 1/2 years ago? It started off with a meeting of over 40 dog run users to committee of nearly 10 people. Now it is just the 3 of us - Billy (Oscar), Angela (Henry) and myself (Valencia and Ursula). We have worked with the best of intentions to move this forward, little steps, too many meetings and emails.

We have reached a point were we have to come back to the community and you have show us you support this project.

Here's the deal: With the most recent site visit, our contractor informed us that the quote that we had been working with did not include excavating the dog run of nearly a foot of chips and such from the whole dog run before they could start. We thought this was obviously part of the project and in all of our conversations had said include everything in the budget. As they informed us it was not. We have been able to negotiate some of this. I wish someone had told me that any construction project will take twice as long as they say and cost 40% more.

We have the permit.
We have a potential start date - October 10 or October 17.
We need the funds to cover this additional expense. We need to raise another $3,500 to cover the excavating of the dog run which will mean taking out all the crap off the top of the dog run. It cost this much because of the roots of the trees the contractor has hire people to dig it out, then they have to cart the stuff away. I hate asking for another donation when y'all have been so generous but I must ask.

We will also loss our $2,000 deposit to the contractor. We will be around to support them but we will not be the leaders.

Yes, we do. We received the project budget and we are short a little more than $2,000.

If we could all donate something ($100, $50 or $20 or another amount) in the next 48 hours, will be able to pay a deposit to the contractor.

Those who can give $50 or more, please give. And for those that $50 is a stretch, please give $20. All donations are tax-deductible.

WHAT’S UP WITH McCarren Dog Run?

After over 18 month’s worth of meetings, fundraising and negotiations, our Dry Well/French Drain Plan has been approved by the NYC Parks Department. This is great news!

For those new to the dog community, this will result in the end of puddles in the large dog run. Woo Hoo!

What’s next? Our contactor will submit our plans and begin the process of getting the permit so the work can get started. We are hopeful because all our previous conversations with NYC Parks and Brooklyn Parks Administrator/Open Space Alliance Executive Director Stephanie Thayer will help move this along.

What does it mean for the dog run now?

* We won’t be getting any new chips because once we get the permit we will have to remove them. So we are waiting.

* We can begin digging out the sides and bringing the mulch & chips to the center which will help with the dust and will help the contractor when work begins.

* We will most likely do another round of fundraising.

* We can also get new dogs users on the Google Group and let them know about our website – McDogRun.org

And depending upon the current, the walker will be bitten and like poor Aric Roman, suffer permanently. But you can, indeed, self-protect.

Just start to adopt this simple strategy — EYEBALL THE BLOCK, AND AVOID A SHOCK. Take a few seconds and make your trajectory toward generally safer, free standing, non-conductive surfaces, ie., plastic, wood, cardboard. Intuit your dog’s cues and if it’s resistant, change directions. Work site perimeters may be live so try to elude them. If necessary, switch sides of the street or your hands when leading to skirt hazards. If you traverse the same route, you may memorize locations of potential dangers. Carry your pooch when in doubt. Consider indoor restroom products like PottyPark when external conditions are chancy or RopeNGo’s hardware-free leash and harness. Our Day Has Come - Fencing Is Done!

Hello McCarren Dog Run Users,

I am happy to announce the last of the snow fencing has been replaced with historical fencing, the project is completed and the big run is now safe for all dogs (Small one's like Wizard and Otto and the Big One's like Mack and Duke). With the project completion, we owe some long over due thank yous.

Next, to our friends at Open Space Alliance. Thank you Julia who managed the bidding and installing process. We know how hard all of this is from our own efforts to install of chain link fencing in both the small and big run. Thank you Stephanie for keeping the McCarren dog run on OSA's agenda. And thank you to OSA's board for the funds and leadership to getting it done. And last but not least, a big thank you to the OSA park workers who dug out several feet of dirt for the fence to be installed and attending to the important details like rat wire and painting.

Rain Rain Go Away

Puddles especially in the dog run are not great places for dogs. Don't let your dog drink from any puddles or eat mud.

If you would like more information about why stagnate water is not good for your dog, please check out this post.

After having no success in finding a pro-bono architect to put together the "official plan" for the dry well/french drain system in the Large Dog Run, we have hired someone who is working on that plan as I type. We have been advised that the best time to embark on such a project is either fall or spring. We are working toward this Fall.

I know this process has been much slower than we expected but we are making progress.

Thanks again for everyone who donated last fall so that we have the money for the project.

The community will be asked to vote on its park priorities. The McCarren Dog Run Drainage Project as well as a Water Source will be listed on the ballot. The winning projects will be considered for funding. It is vital that dog owners show up at this meeting.

You will also be able to suggest other ideas (like better bathrooms or an off-leash park for dogs in North Brooklyn) or anything else having to do with the city parks in North Brooklyn.

Don't worry if you can't be there at 6:30 ... Come when you can ... And vote.

It is never a good idea to let your dog drink stagnate water (even if it is in a bowl), eat mud or play with toys or sticks that have been exposed to dog waste.

Please help spread the word by referring dog owners to the website especially this post

If your dog gets giardia or leptosporosis or is experiencing abnormally loose stool, take them to the vet as soon as possible and please send an email to mcdogrun@gmail.com letting us know the outcome.

As you may know, we are lobbying the Parks Department to allow us to install a dry well/french drain in the large run which would stop these puddles so being able to document what we all believe to be try is important.

Please spread the word as there are always people who don't know about giardia or leptospo

Hi Dog Owners

I got an email this evening from an owner who was at the big run when a Chihuahua got roughed up pretty badly by a Husky. UPDATE: the chihuahua is okay and the Husky had just been adopted.

Thought this is a good time to re-distribute two helpful documents from our friend, Denise of Empire of the Dog. www.empireofthedog.com. Check them out on the right side of the Blog.

* Dog Park 101 is just some basic information.
* And the other is about aggression. Always good to review the documents from time to time.

(And if you have access to free printing, make copies and bring to the run when you come. It's a tool for anyone especially people not on the email list...I KNOW it is crazy that there are people not on the list ;) HEY - JOIN THE GOOGLE GROUP...SEND AN EMAIL TO MCDOGRUN@GMAIL.COM.

And it is each of our responsibilities to ensure that the Dog Run is safe for all dogs (big & small).

If you see something that doesn't seem right, say something. Don't know how to approach it, start with something like "New dog?" or "Hey what kinda dog is that?" or "How old is your dog?"

Don't did the classic NYC thing and ignore it.

A reminder that New York has a dog bite law

In this case, the owner of the Husky is responsible for the Chihuahua's vet bills.

There is a warning on the gates of each run that aggressive dogs are not allowed in either run. Of course, many people don't read signs (those displayed by dogs or those written by humans). Or don't understand what variety of packages
dog aggression comes in. So I am glad to see Denise's handouts again.

The people who belong to this email group usually are those who are very involved in taking care of the run and their animals. Those on this list typically are responsible, aware owners. NOT ON THE LIST...JOIN IT BY SENDING AN EMAIL TO MCDOGRUN@GMAIL.COM

As members of the McDogRun community, we are interested in keeping the run safe. Part of ensuring that safety is to educate people who are behaving in an unsafe way (or allowing their dogs to to the same).

I know it's hard to approach an aggressive dog's owner, especially if they seem indifferent, or even aggressive themselves. It's easier to just wait it out or hope they leave.

I encourage everyone here to help each other in approaching and educating these owners, and in the extreme cases asking them to leave. I've seen "good" dog owners leave the park because an aggressive-dog or bully-dog owner wouldn't take their dog out of the park, and that shouldn't happen.

In the future, when I see a dog whose owner might need a little, "Is that a new dog? Do you want a rec for a trainer?" I'll see if I can get another owner to go with me into the conversation. I'm a little gun shy when approaching potential conflict and asking a friend, or new friend, to help makes it easier for me. Feel free to ask me the same if you need a copilot.

Below are notes from the McCarren Dog Run meeting on Thursday, 7/16/09. Approximately 15-20 dog run users participated. Also in attendance: Assemblyman Joe Lentol, Amy Cleary from his office, Stephanie Thayer (OSA/Parks), and Julia Morrow from OSA. The meeting began by discussing specific topics, and then turned into a very loosely structured Q&A.

Benches
Christine (Valencia) explained that a volunteer is making new benches. We'll be getting two big ones for the big run and two small ones for the small run. The big run will also get station for water bowls & bottles. These should be finished by the end of the month.

New Fencing
Christine introduced Assemblyman Joe Lentol, who explained that Parks Department’s contractor at Sternberg Park will bring over fencing from Sternberg Park that will match our fencing A contractor has been awarded the bid and it is going through legal review. Park’s design and construction department expects work at Sternberg to start in about five weeks,

Removing the Spikes
Assemblyman Lentol said he'd had a discussion with the Commissioner of Parks about removing the spikes. They are thinking of putting a bar over the spikes, which will look like a fence at Sternberg that has a flat iron piece welded on top. It is probably preferable to do it this way rather than removing the spikes because that way the fences keep their height.

Additional Funding
Assemblyman Lentol put in an application with Albany to get more funding for the dog run, but the focus right now is on the type of funding he has access to at the moment is supposed to be used for transportation projects, so it isn't looking likely.

Previous Funding
Stephanie Thayer (in a dual role as Administrator for parks in North Brooklyn and OSA's Executive Director) spoke about how Assemblyman Lentol allocated money years ago for both dog runs, but the funding was not drawn down. In the fall, they realized the total of $8000 was not enough to complete fencing in McGolrick Dog Park, so OSA kicked in $5000 toward that project. McCarren Dog Run will be getting salvaged fencing from Sternberg, and OSA is kicking in $500 as a stipend for the volunteers to install it. If necessary, OSA will allocate more funds. Parks/OSA are overseeing the project and will keep McCarren Dog Run updated.

Q&A portion:

How does funding get delineated?
Last fall, Assemblymember Lentol and Stephanie asked people from both dog runs what the top priorities were and both dog runs said "fencing.” She explained that it wasn't a matter of preference that McGolrick got the money for fencing; there just wasn't enough to do new fencing at both runs. By installing Sternberg's historical iron fencing at McCarren, the fencing needs at both dog runs would be addressed.

When the funding was put in, years ago, for improvements at McGolrick and McCarren, Dio had not been injured, and thus the spikes at McCarren were not a concern." At the time that the decision about how to address the fencing needs of both runs was made, not everyone was aware that Dio had been injured on the spikes.

Amy Cleary (from Assemblyman Lentol's office) explained that the fencing plan has been delayed because of contract issues: because of the economy, tons of contractors applied, and they have to find the lowest bid and determine who is qualified. However a contractor has been found so things are moving along.

Fencing is a top priority. Longer term priorities include drainage and lighting.

Stephanie talked about how some corporate volunteers came in to dig out and remove some of the underlying dirt and chips, and she would like to do more of that and bring in a bigger group.

When the fencing comes over, what is the process of communication?
Stephanie is willing to contact McCarren Dog Run via Christine with status updates.

Can anything be done about drainage?
As the dog run gets more populated, there could be more serious illnesses (like the recent leptospirosis outbreak) and people could get sick. This isn't just a problem in the dog run, but around the park -- anywhere there is stagnant water. Stephanie recognizes that drainage is an issue.

What are the off-leash rules? Signage is contradictory, and cops are being rough on people.
Stephanie says park staff is overwhelmed with trying to keep stuff clean, keep kids safe, etc. . She asked the NYPD to help with enforcements issues, such as vandalism, litter, illegal BBQs, and while they're in the park, they have the right to ticket for off-leash dogs. However she will investigate the conflicting signs in McCarren Park. Christine emphasized the benefits of having off-leash times in the park, especially between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m., because when people are in the park with their dogs, it keeps the park safer. In Prospect Park, having off-leash laws has lead to more people using the park, and keeping it safer.

My expectation is that McCarren was not designated for off leash hours because Parks prohibits dogs on athletic fields, and McCarren is predominantly athletic fields. Macri, about 4 blocks away, and Grand Ferry are the closest off leash parks.)

Can we get water in the dog run?
Assemblyman Lentol is trying to get a hold of money for this as well as for the drainage issue.. He is hoping we can get other elected officials to put some money in the pot. Stephanie says that we all need to participate and help raise money as Christine has in the past. Angela (Henry) mentioned that many people are willing to help fundraise, but we need to know what to do.

Joe Lentol has Multi-Modal money is trying to see if there is a way to use those funds for the dog run improvements. Amy from his office explained that they tried to get extra lighting for the run by asking for more street lights in the part of Driggs just outside of the run, but when DOT checked out the current lighting situation, they called it sufficient.

Stephanie recommended we visit various elected officials (city, state, etc.) at the beginning of the year. Amy from Joe Lentol's office offered to provide a list of the elected officials we could contact (including elected officials for bordering areas of the neighborhood, since their constituents use the run, too). Stephanie suggested that for those meetings, we bring photos, news reports, etc. to get their attention. Angela described the state-of-the-art drainage system at Tompkins Square Park's dog run.

Joe Lentol wrapped things up by saying that he was happy to meet us all, that he's looking forward to partnering with us in the future.

Your Dog & Stagnant Water, Not a Good Combination

As always, if your dog is acting sick or not its normal self, take him/her to your vet to be checked out.

Most of all, don't bring a potentially unhealthy dog to the run.

Stagnant water no matter where it is in the city (in or outside of the dog run) carries the potential for many diseases.

Do NOT let your dog play in or drink stagnant water or eat mud. Playing in muddy pools carries the potential for danger,
especially in the context of an overly wet summer like the one we currently are encountering.

THE SAME GOES FOR CHILDREN.

If you have been in a muddy area, wash or wipe off your dog's paws (so that it does not lick the paws and then ingest something harmful)

If you see a sick dog in the run, tell the owner about the EXTREME danger of parasites and recommend that they get their dog tested and remove the dog from the run.

After all this rain, this parasite could be in a variety of places that water pools and rats enjoy.

As always, be careful and be responsible.

Dog Run Fundraiser with Baked Goods

Saturday’s fund-raiser was a success! We raised over $700 at the table
and received a $200 commitment to build benches. Leftovers were
donated to the soup kitchen in Greenpoint. We added nearly fifty
members to the e-mail list, and several dog-run users offered to
volunteer at future events—welcome and thank you to all of them!

In previous meetings, dog-run users have expressed their interest in
making the following improvements, many of which we can now work
toward:

* Benches for both runs (approx. $200–$250 for materials), which a
volunteer has offered to build in the next month or so.
* Small Bulletin Board for smaller dog run (approx $100)
* New Water-Drinking Station (approx. $100). This will be a place for
water jugs and drinking bowls and will be relocated to the space where
Dio was impaled. The goal is to help prevent the chips from becoming
so high, thus making it a safer, less jumpable corner.
* A New Water Jug or Two since the person who lent them needs them
back (approx. $100)
* Short Term Solution to the Fence Spikes (approx. $100 to $300),
while a long-term solution is negotiated with the parks department.
* Establishing a rainy-day fund for emergency repairs that we can
continue to build up.

In addition, we might consider making donations to our partners in
keeping the dog run operating:
* The North Brooklyn Open Space Alliance (OSA), whose efforts in
McCarren Park support our own
* NYC Dog, for their ongoing advocacy for dog issues in New York City
and our parks

Dog Runs are for Dogs: Keeping Dogs & Kids Safe

Several members have noted and expressed concern about an increase in parents who bring young children into both runs. The Rules of the Runs sign at the gate of the large run states that children must be accompanied by adults. The identical sign that used to hang on the gate of the small run has disappeared...a new one is forthcoming.

In the interest of the safety of children and dogs, I wanted to remind everyone:

-the dog run is designated for dogs and their adult caretakers.

-the dog run is not a petting zoo

-the dog run is not a playground (there is a playground at Driggs & Lorimer)

-the dog run is not a picnic area (there are tables and benches right outside the run).

-many dogs (especially smaller breeds) are afraid of children

-dogs may bite out of fear

-dogs relieve themselves in the run

-the run, therefore, can be a source of parasites like Giardia (to which humans and animals are susceptible)

-therefore, a child who plays in the run like it is a sandbox, or who eats while playing in the run might get ill.

If you are a parent who wants to enter a run with your young child, please ask those in the dog run if their dogs are okay with small children before bringing her/him in.

As a small dog owner, I want my dog run to be as safe and healthy an environment as possible (for dogs and humans of all ages). If you are a dog owner who witnesses some behavior that you know to be potentially dangerous, say something. Say something to the adult in charge and to others in the run. If the behavior continues, work as a group or leave the run.

Given that this activity is happening, please be sensitive to the level activity in the runs as it may not be conducive for normal dog run play.

Freak Accident at the Dog Run/Your Help Needed

good evening dog community,

this weekend the unexpected happened -- a dog scaled the fence and was impaled by one of the spikes. thankfully there is a happy ending to this incident with someone helping from the street to get Dio back to the dog run side and the spike missing a major artery, you can read the details below.

YOUR HELP IS NEED to safeguard the run so this NEVER happens again:
* Help with a Clean-Up this Saturday March 14 at 10 am. One of the reasons Dio was able to make it over the fence was that the woods chips were so high are on the side especially in the corner nearest driggs and the small dog run. Come on Saturday and help pull the chips from the fence.

* Someone, or a few people talk, to Rich (has a Puggle named Chesty) and ask him to focus his dog run upkeep energy toward pulling the chips away from the fence especially the cornered mentioned.

* Or help figure out how to safeguard the spikes: One thought was to put tennis balls on all the spikes,
however after a little more thought, we concluded that this just make the spikes more appealing to some dogs and continue to be dangerous. We need to determine some way to cape the spikes. Another thought is to put black chair leg bumpers on each of the spike http://www.mclendons.com/item.asp?sku=10948400
Can someone investigate this idea? Or find a better solution. and share with the community.

I realize that one of best solutions would be to grind the spikes down but that is likely too expensive and would have to work through the parks department for approval and that can take forever.

Hello,

I got your email address from a man in the dog run
yesterday after my dog Dio had a death defying accident
in an attempt to jump out of the dog run.

It was yesterday morning at 11 am. Dio decided to jump the
fence to get a squirrel on the other side. I was standing
right by him and the next thing I knew he was in
mid-jump. His leg caught on one of the spikes and he was
impaled. The spike went in his stomach and out the back of
his leg and he was hanging by the leg over the fence on
the outside. I was trying to hold him up yelling for help
and a girl driving down driggs jumped out of her car and
pushed him up on the outside and we were able to lift him
off the ten inch spike and set him down inside the run.
That girl saved his life then she jumped back in her car
and drove off.

When I set him down he was in shock but standing up -
I rushed him in my friend's car to the vet on Berry and
N. 1st and they took him into emergency and operated on
him for almost two hours. The dr. said his main artery
was pumping in plain view and that the spike had missed
it by a hair and that he would certainly have not survived
if it hadn't have been just so. He said it was a miracle
that the spike hadn't lacerated the artery considering the profundity
of the wound. He was able to sew him up and he thinks
and hopes dio will be ok and that he'll recover without
infection. I can't tell you what a scary sight it was to
watch and I realize Dio was VERY lucky to have fallen
the way he did.

I wanted to tell you what happened to Dio and also to report
that the wood chips have built up so high in the corner
where he jumped - (the southwest corner), that the fence
is only about 3 to 3 1/2 ft. high - an easy jump for many dogs.

Actually the whole fence along driggs is really low now because
of the chips. I am SO afraid this will happen to another dog with
spring coming and all the squirrels running around. Dio isn't even a
big jumper - from the inside it looks easy but in mid-air when you
see that drop on the outside a dog might want to turn back like I
think Dio did and fall on those horrendous spikes! I'm dying just
thinking about it happening again.

I have some ideas about how we could fix it - by lashing
plywood to the fence so it would go above the spikes in
combination with digging out some of the wood chips.
Or maybe you guys have a better idea. I am happy
to help out with whatever you decide should happen. I think
we should act fast though so no one else suffers what Dio
is suffering now. Please let me know what I can do to help.

A big thank everyone who attended Wednesday's "State of the Dog Run" meeting. It was a very good meeting. Here are a few of the highlights:

* Assemblymember Lentol allocated close to $5k for the improvement of the McCarren Dog Run. He also allocated the same amount for Mcgolrick Dog Run. Betsy (Finn) and I attended the meeting on Friday. Report after this report.

* New leadership for the Dog Run/Expanding the Committee

* Big issues/concerns mentioned in the meeting were: dust, need for new benches, safety in the small run, better lighting, replacing the snow fencing in large run and UPDATED RULES FOR BOTH RUNS.

Report on the meeting with Lentol & Brooklyn Parks Commissioner: Another very good meeting. The funds allocated to our run will be spent to improve the lighting in the run (like using high watt bulbs or cleaning the glass in the current lamp posts), replacing the the snow fencing and, if there is money, benches. The Assemblymember acknowledged all the hard work we have put into our run! Some time in the next few months please expect these improvements to be implemented.

I express our interest in having water in our little triangle of the park.

Both the Assemblymember and Commissioner recommended that the dog run along with the green garden people and compost group as well as Mcgolrick Dog Run and maybe the Cooper Dog Run go to our City Council Members (Yassky & Reyna) and the Borough President because they could allocate those type of funds. If this is something we would like to do, we should try to meet with our electeds in the next 6 months so they can include it in the next budget. Please contact me if you want to be part of this and I will provide contact information for the other community groups.

And OSA has been talking the State Parks People about allowing dogs into the State Park located on Kent & North 7. The Assemblymember said he would also speak to State Parks People about it. Keep your fingers crossed that some day our dogs will be allowed there.

State of the Dog Run Meeting - September 24, 7 pm

You are invited to the upcoming State of the Dog Run Meeting on Wednesday, September 24, at 7 pm out side the dog run (at the Urban Rustic picnic tables).

This is an important meeting, we have some very exciting developments we would like to share with the Dog Run Community and we have several openings including small run manager, large run manager, cleanup managers and community organizers on the Dog Run Committee.

As you may know the McCarren Dog Run Association is a volunteer committee that is responsible for the upkeep of both the small and large dog run in McCarren Park. We are required by the Parks Department to maintain an active volunteer base to continue to have the both runs.

Who should attend the meeting? Anyone who uses the run more than once a week.

Why should you attend? Well, besides the exciting news...which is very good. It is important to be active in the community to ensure your dog(s) have a safe place to play or sit.

When again? Wednesday, September 24, 7 pm, out side the dog run (at the Urban Rustic picnic tables)

WANTED: Large Dog Crate

An odd tradition has started on Sunday mornings at McCarren Dog Run in Brooklyn. Strangers believe it is the perfect time to ditch their well behaved loving dogs. We think they hope that the users of the Dog Run will foster these dogs as well as do the hard work of finding forever homes for them.

While we are trying to stop this tradition, the winner of this week's foster a ditched dog contest is Adam. He took in a sweet Pit Mix and is in need of a Crate for a 40 lb Dog. If you have a crate that your dog isn't using and want to put it to good use, please contact Adam at adamdoesit@gmail.com.

· General overview: what we've accomplished & where we're headed

Hilary talked about where we started over a year ago when we first met in January of ’06. There was no association of the McCarren Dog Run and we were badly in need of one. We began with committees but that quickly dissolved to a few key people managing the Dog Run, mainly Hilary and Christine – with help of others. We’ve accomplished a great deal since we began. Successful fundraising allowed for: securing the small dog run with range fencing and double gates, new benches, message board, garbage cans, new gate/latch for larger run.

The most important accomplishments have been the relationships we have build with the Parks Department and NYC Dog the umbrella organization for Dog Runs city wide. NYC Dog allows us to have 501c3 (non-profit) status and offers support on all matters.

Tannise from the Partnership for Parks explained her position as our contact at her organization and talked about how she continue to facilitate our clean ups.

· New Dog Run Manager
Hilary announced that she would be stepping down as Dog Run Manager. We need a replacement but no one has volunteered. In the mean time different individual jobs will be delegated to different people.

· Clean up/Work Party Schedule & Managers
Kim (Winston) & Chris (Lucy) have volunteered to take over the management of Clean up/Work Parties. Adam and Kim (Stella) have volunteered to assist them. They will be in charge of contacting Jose from the Parks Department to order wood chips & tools, posting signs, sending out an e-mail to remind the group & asking the website manager to post a notice on the website.

· Website/Google Group Manager
John (spike) has volunteered to take over the management of the website. Rebecca (Bob Walks Dogs) has offered to take over the management of the Google Group.

· Grant money & Fence repair
We have been awarded a $1,000 Capacity Fund Grant from Partnerships for Parks. This money is to go towards replacing the snow fence on the curve going that leads out to Driggs Ave. in the large run. Hilary will continue to work with the Parks Department to see this project to completion. Christine will assist her.

· Rules Signs
The issue of rules signs was brought up. It was suggested that a committee be formed to decide which rules should be posted. Other Dog Runs such as Thompkins Square and Union Square, should be observed as an example. Funds would have to be raised to pay for the signs and the Parks Department would need to give final approval on the signs before they were created and installed. We need a volunteer to head this committee.

· Health Issues (Giardia, Lymes Disease)
Giardia and Lymes Disease are the two major health concerns in McCarren Park. Large signs should be posted in conjunction with the Parks Department to warn people of the dangers. We need a volunteer to follow through with this project.

· Small Run Use
The small dog run is being used by small dogs more and more. We have started the “Small Dog Playgroup” on Saturday from 10am – 12pm and on Sundays from 12pm – 2pm. It has become hugely popular. Now that more small dog owners are becoming used to going in the small dog run, they are using it more during other times as well. This is a good thing as it is safer for the small dogs and less annoying to the large dogs in the large run and allows for the large dogs to have more space to run and play. The small dog run can still be used by owners with aggressive dogs but only if no small dogs are using it.

McCarren Dog Run Association has embarked on creating a fundraising calendar for 2007 featuring portraits of Dogs of the Run.

All the services for the calendar have been donated except the cost of printing the calendar. To cover that expense, we are selling ads to local businesses and individuals who are interested in reaching 1,000 dog lovers. If you are interested, the ads are very reasonably priced at $75and $150. Please write to info@mcdogrun.org for details. The ad deadline is October 24.

There are no steadfast rules but it is intended that the small dog run be used by small dogs (30lbs and under) especially during organized playgroups. *Small Dog Run vs. Large Dog Run: The small run is now safe and secure for small dogs. There are no steadfast rules regarding the small run but it is intended that it be used by small dogs (30 lbs and under), especially during organized play groups. Many owners with aggressive dogs or dog in heat like to use the small run by themselves. It is suggested that they do this during slow times.

*Open and Close One Safety Gate at a Time when entering the run. Dogs love to meet and greet newcomers. Please pay special attention when entering and exiting so no dog has a chance to run out.

*Unleash your dog within the safety gates before releasing your dog into the dog run. A leashed dog can excite problem dogs into aggression. Dogs can also be more aggressive when leashed due to the loss of control over their environment. They may feel frustrated, anxious and or threatened and since they can’t do what they instinctually do (flee or fight) to protect themselves and/or their owners they do what they can, they bark and lunge. It is safer to leash your dog up within the safety gates and not in the dog run itself.

*Stay conscious of the environment. Using headphones in the dog run is not a good idea. Talking on your cell phone is not a good idea either.

*Keep an eye on your dog. Always keep your dog in view and under control. Be especially aware of your dog when children are near.

*No aggressive dogs. At the first sign of aggression please remove your dog from the dog run. Our dog run is open to all (non-membership) we and our dogs could be vulnerable to dogs that don’t know their physical boundaries. The dog that knows good physical boundaries can play without shoving the other dog. There is a difference between rough play and fighting. Dogs at play often mouth, jump on and/or nip each other. It can look like fighting, but no blood is drawn and the biting is inhibited as it doesn't break the skin. A dog in play will play without accentuated or obsessive physical contact. If your dog begins to get aroused divert his/her attention before it escalates and if necessary leave the dog run.

*Know the signs of aggression. Although difficult to define on certain breeds, the conflicted or overly confident dogs’ ears are usually up and/or forward. They face and stare directly at the other dog or human with whom they are interacting. Eye contact is sustained hard and direct. Their brow is furrowed. The tail carriage is likely to be high up and arched over the rump. The (hackles) fur along their back stands up like a ridge and the chest and stance is forward. Dogs with shorter tails might be straight and wagging stiffly.

*If a fight breaks out, all involved dog owners should immediately help break it up. **First and foremost – Please try and remain calm and never put a body part between the fighting dogs.

- For the experienced guardian only- take your dog by its hindquarters – just below the rump – and raise them up like you are holding a wheelbarrow and start backing up slowly as you pull the dog with you. Be very careful as you pull because if one dog has another by a body part and decides to hold on you risk tearing the skin.

- Once the dogs have separated themselves take yours away.

- If you suspect damage has been done to you or your dog exchange vital information with all involved parties as you leave to get vet care.

*If your dog consistently harasses other dogs or people by intimidating, mounting, or annoying another dog, correct that behavior immediately. If it continues please take your dog out of the dog run at least for a short time out.

*Closely supervise intact males (non-neutered). If your intact male is involved in any altercation, regardless of which dog started it, please leave. (Intact males commonly provoke aggression.)

*No dogs in heat in the dog run. Since most females go into heat only 2x a year and are considered to be “in heat” for 21 days (7 days going in, 7 days in heat and 7 days going out, it is advisable not to bring them to a dog run during this time. Male dogs can sense females in heat through pheromones. These are airborne chemical attractants that are liberated from the female when she is cycling. They travel through the air for great distances.

*Teach your dog to be quiet. Some barking is fine, expected and normal. However incessant barking can be annoying to those around you. Try and find creative ways to discourage barking by changing your dogs focus towards something more fun, like a game of chase and interaction with you.

MORE DO’S AND DON’TS

*No food in the dog run. This means human food and dog food and treats.

*No prong, spiked collars or choke chains in the dog run. The ring ends can get caught on other objects as well as other dogs’ collars. Leave on your dog's regular collar with ID and license while in the run.

*Do not bring rawhides or toys to the dog run. Many dogs are so crazy for rawhides and toys that they will fight over them. (This does not apply to special events.)

*The small blue balls for playing handball are dangerous for medium and large dogs as they can easily get lodged in their throat. If you bring a handball or any small ball to the dog run and a larger dog is interested in playing, please refrain from using them and be sure to take them with you when you leave.

*Do not bring dogs that are ill or sick into the dog run.

*Shared water bowls can cause dogs to get sick if one of the dogs drinking from the bowl is sick. Refresh the water bowl as often as possible or bring your own water bowl.

*Put dog hair in a trash can if you groom your dog in the dog run.

*No glass containers in the dog run.

*Pick up after your dog & kindly alert others if they miss a pick up.

*Please throw away all trash, even empty water bottles. Thanks so much for not littering & keeping our dog run clean! Empty water bottles are not good chew toys for dogs. If you have time, please feel free to pick up any garbage you see on the ground. Set an example! It is up to us to keep our dog run clean.

ATTENTION PARENTS
*Bring your children into the dog run at their/your own risk. ABSOLUTELY NO INFANTS OR TODDLERS.

We recommend that children under 8 years of age not be permitted in the dog park but if you choose to please, for their safety, keep children under your supervision and within arms reach at all times.

*CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE BROUGHT INTO THE DOG RUN IN STROLLERS!

* KEEP BABIES AND TODDLERS OUT OF THE REACH OF DOGS!
Dangling feet are stimulating to dogs. They may jump up as if playing with a toy.

PLEASE EDUCATE CHILDREN ON SMART BEHAVIOR AROUND DOGS:

1. Do not run or scream in the dog run. (Running and screaming are invitations for dogs to chase.)

2. Do not touch or take a dog's ball without speaking to the owner first.

3. Ask an adult before petting an unfamiliar dog. All dogs are potential biters no matter what size. Just because a dog is small does not mean it is safe and can’t do damage. Wait for the dog to approach you instead of offering your hand.

4. Do not touch dogs while they are resting or sleeping, especially if they are under a bench.

5. Do not hug or kiss dogs that are not your own, however friendly they may seem.

6. Avoid rough play with dogs or other children while in the dog run.

7. If a dog growls at you, avoid eye contact by looking immediately away. Do not run away. Instead, back slowly away, continuing to avoid eye contact. If you have something in your pocket like a ball toss it to distract the dog as you continue to back away.

These rules and guidelines are meant to educate people who use the dog run in order to make it a safer, cleaner space for the dogs of McCarren Park.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss how best to budget the $1,000 we raised on May 13th.

We all agreed that the first priority was to secure the smaller dog run and make it a safe space for small dogs. This will not only prevent injury for the small dogs but also leave more room in the large run for the big dogs to play. It will solve over crowding problems during peak hours. The Parks Department is behind this decision and NYC Dog is a huge proponent for creating separate spaces for small dogs.

We discussed the possible conflict between small dog owners and the dog owners who currently use the run. The smaller run is currently used by large dogs, aggressive dogs or dogs in heat. We don’t want to shut these dogs and owners out of the run. These dogs need a place to go too. However, in a busy city, it is not realistic to offer a run that is used just for one dog during peak times, especially when the larger run is over crowded and small dogs are being injured.

Solution: establish small dog hours for the smaller run so that the space can be shared

Proposed Small Dog Run Hours:
Monday –Friday 4:00PM – Sunset
Saturday & Sunday – 10:00 AM – Sunset

We will create a sign (pre-approved by Parks Dept.) on the gate specifying the hours.

We discussed the materials we will need to buy in order to secure the small run:

Wire fencing to go around the entire inside of the Wraght Iron fence. We may be able to get a certain amount of this free from the city. Hilary is waiting to hear from Jose on how much we can get. She also inquired as to where the city gets this material from and if we might be able to purchase the remainder of it from the same source.

Wire fencing and snow fencing to build the Double Doors at the entrance of the run. We should be able to get both

A New sign to go on the gate of the small run specifying hours.

Dog Bowls for small run (plus lock & chain - cemented like in large run).

Once the above items are purchased, if there is any money left over, we should buy the “rat wire” to replace the flimsy green mesh the is surrounding the large run. After that, we should put any extra money towards a new, permanent Message Board that has plexi-glass and a lock and is water proof. We probably won’t have any money left over for the message board but we will continue to fund-raise for these items.

We discussed a new fund raiser idea based on something “Fido” in Prospect Park does. It’s called a “Coffee Clatch” and we would basically just set up a table with a sign outside the run. We will pass out the new “McCarren Dog Run Etiquette” Document, answer questions, get people to sign up for our Google group list serve and talk to people about what we do with the Association and ask for donations. Fido has had great success with this program and they do it once a month. It helps raise awareness and money and takes very little energy to pull off! Our first Coffee Clatch will be the last Sunday in June – June 25th.

We discussed goal dates for building the small dog run:
Sunday July 9th (along with the regular clean up) – put up inside fencing.
Sunday, July 16th – Put up Double Doors
Sunday, August 6th (along with regular clean up) we will get new chips and do any maintenance needed. That evening we will have a small dog run opening celebration! Fun.

Christine (Valencia) and Hilary (Eliott) are going to talk to some hardware stores and make a trip to Lowes to get exact pricing on all materials.

Lauren (Brody), Mina (Nigel) & Echo (Stuey) are going to work together to create a personalized document based on the “Dog Run Etiquette” Document recently published by NYC Dog. This document should be completed in time to make copies for the Coffee Clatch on June 25th.

Fundraiser Succes!

A very special thanks to Joan at PS9 Pet Supplies for hosting our first fundraiser last Saturday. Also a big thanks to all who helped plan the event, those who attended the event and especially those who donated money to the event by purchasing raffle tickets and beer. I'm pleased to announce that we raised $1,000 at the event! We have contacted all winners who were not present at the raffle by telephone. Please come to PS9 during business hours to pick up your prize.

We are planning a meeting to discuss our budget and plans on how to spend the money. Stay tuned for more information.

New Benches / New Message Board

In other news, Hilary (Eliott) was able to get a message board that someone was throwing out at her work. It's quite large. She is in the process of painting it to match Park Specifications and arranging for Jose and the Parks Dept. to mount it to the fence. This will make it easier for us to communicate with eachother. Please check the message board when you visit the run for updates and feel free to post something for the group. The only rule is that it must be dog related. Anything that doesn't have to do with the dogs will be removed.

We had a great first meeting attended by approximately 20 dog owners/patrons of McCarren Dog Run.
Kerry Lowe who is our official representative from “Partnership for Parks” was present. She was an excellent resource throughout the meeting and let us know that we should contact her with any questions, concerns and needs for guidance (kerry.lowe@parks.nyc.gov / 718-965-8907). She has a lot of experience working with Park Volunteer Groups and Dog Run Volunteer Groups.
Linda Post from “NYC Dog” (pronounced “Nice” Dog) was present. She was extremely helpful in offering us advice and guidance. She was a part of the “Cooper Park” Dog Run which was recently built. She helped give us pointers on how they put certain things into place. NYC Dog is an umbrella organization for all of the Dog Runs in the City. They can offer us support and resources and act as a fiscal sponsor until we can gain 501c3 (non-profit) status (if we choose to do so).
We started out with a discussion re: why we felt the need for a meeting in the fist place. There used to be an Association, several years ago, which for one reason or another fizzled out. “Tommy” the self appointed Dog Run Foreman was there in the interim to maintain the run. He unfortunately had to move back to Poland. Now there is nobody maintaining the run and it is in desperate need of maintenance and repair!
Every Dog Run in the city has an association except for us. There are certain things the Parks Department will provide for us free of charge (Tools, Wood Chips, Snow Fence & Garbage Bags). Everything else is up to us (Labor, repairs, benches, message board, permanent fencing, etc.). Although it would be nice if the Parks Department would maintain the run for us, it’s simply not going to happen. It is the same for every dog run in the city. They will give us only certain basic things but we are expected to create and association to maintain the run. Our park contacts (Tony Rosa & Jose Urena) are extremely kind and helpful and they are very enthusiastic about working with us to create a clean safe space for our dogs.
The good news is that because there are many other Dog Run Associations to go before us, there is no need for us to “reinvent the wheel”. We can use other Associations as an example of what works well and what doesn’t work well. We can also tailor approaches to fit our specific needs.
Our Name: We decided there was no need to come up with anything too clever. We’ll just call ourselves “McCarren Dog Run Association” and for short: “MC Dog Run”.
Our Mission: To provide a clean, safe space for the dogs of McCarren Park.
Officers/Committees: We decided to create committees instead of traditional officers. This will help distribute responsibilities more evenly. We decided to break into three committees initially. If we need to make adjustments or changes as we go along, we can do that. The committees will be:

Ø Maintenance (regular cleanups & small repairs)

Ø Development (donations, grant writing, fundraising)

Ø Projects (message board, benches, small dog run, etc.)

A further explanation of committees will follow. Each committee will have a “point person”.

Regular Maintenance: Kim (Winston) Is the Point Person for the Maintenance Committee. Other members of the Maintenance Committee are: Ashley (Latta), Chad (Machiavelli & Tenzin), Rebecca & Bob (star dog walkers).

The Maintenance Committee is in charge of putting up signs and encouraging people to attend maintenance work parties word of mouth (everyone can help do this). They will also be in contact with Jose Urena of the Parks Dept. to make sure the he comes with the tools and materials we need and make sure that all of the tools he gives us get returned to him intact. They will help to decided what special projects we will work on at each work party besides just general maintenance (i.e.: spreading wood chips, raking leaves and picking up trash and poop).

We decided it would be easiest to start with once a month during the Winter on the first Sunday of every month from 10 am to approx 1pm.

This makes the first work party Sunday, February 5^th - 10am.

The first The first big project to take care of at our maintenance meeting will be leveling the run. There is currently a hole in the middle and all of the chips are built up on the sides. We need to rake all of the chips down from the sides into the center to make a level area before we can add new chips.

We need to create a “driveway” at the back fence so that the snow fence can go flush against the concrete and not need to be held up by that log. Also, so that the city can drive their truck up into the park to dump chips.

We have communicated to the park that we do not want pine chips from the Christmas trees because the dogs eat the pine and get sick. They will not dump pine anymore.

Development Committee: The Point Person for the Development Committee is Hilary (Eliott). Other Development Committee Members are Loretta (Wormer), Chad (Machiavelli & Tenzin), Elizabeth & Chris (Grady), Christine (Valencia).

The Development Committee will be in charge of paperwork and raising money for the run. There is a grant offered by the Parks Department for up to $5,000. The Deadline for this grant is February 1^st. We need to make this application our first priority. We can use “NYC Dog” as our fiscal sponsor for non-profit status. We will need to discuss and decide if we want to eventually become non-profit ourselves. A longer term goal will be to budget out specific items that we want for the park like permanent fencing and deciding how best to raise funds for these larger goals. If we do get a grant we will need to work with the “Projects” committee to decide how to spend the money based on which project is a priority.

Projects Committee: The Point person for the Projects committee is Briana (Banjo & Jasmine). Other Projects Committee Members are: John (Spike), Chad (Machiavelli & Tenzin), Elizabeth & Chris (Grady), Kat (Kayla).

The Projects Committee will be in charge of creating a list of things we need to do and get beyond regular maintenance, i.e.: message board, benches, doggie bag dispensers, “rat wire” along fences to keep small dogs in, loading area for small dog park, permanent fencing, etc.

They will need to determine which project is most important and how best to go about getting it done. Can we get it donated? Will we have to raise money for it? If so, how much will it cost and how should we go about raising the money (ask for donations, grant $, hold a fundraiser, etc.). The Projects committee will work closely with the Development Committee in making decisions on how to get money and what to spend it on.

Safety Concerns: The issue of safety came up a few times. It is very important to everyone to make our Dog Run as safe as possible but we don’t want to police it so stringently that no one is having fun anymore. We want to find a balance.

Small Dogs/Large Dogs: One basic way to make the Dog Run safer is to make a separate area for small and large dogs. We need to put “rat wire” up along all of the fences to keep small dogs and woodchips in. We also need to create a “loading dock” for the small dog run so that dogs can’t scoot in and out as easily.

There was a concern that right now the small run is used by dogs who are in heat or are not playing well with the other dogs in the larger run. This is helpful to owners who’s dogs are having a rough day and still need to get energy out and run off leash. No ultimate conclusion was made but Kerry from the parks dept. did mention that the general consensus from the other dog runs in the city is that the small dog run is for small dogs. If a dog is having an aggressive day, then it has to miss out on coming to the dog run. We discussed creating a schedule for the small run so that it can be shared. We also discussed the possibility of just using our discretion on a case by case basis, sharing the small dog run but giving small dogs first refusal, i.e.: if the small dog run is not being used by a small dog or dogs, then a larger dog could use it but if a small dog or dogs come and want to use it, then that dog would have to leave.

Aggressive Dogs/Irresponsible Owners: There were many concerns about dogs who are in heat or dogs that are aggressive and who start fights coming into the dog run. The problem is that the Dog Run is a public space and no one has the absolute authority to throw anyone out. The safest thing to do is just take your dog out when you see an aggressive dog coming in. However, there is power in numbers and because we are now an official organization, we can support each other in talking calmly to dog owners about not bringing their aggressive dog to the run.

There are rules posted outside of the Run which state very specifically that dogs who are in heat should not be in the run and that dogs who are aggressive should not be in the Run. It is possible to point these rules out to an owner with an aggressive dog. This should be handled in a very careful way and on a case by case basis. Don’t confront someone that seems like they could be dangerous. We should communicate to each other. If a certain owner or dog is dangerous, spread the word so that they feel pressure to do something about it (like leave and not come back).

Not all dogs will get along: Even responsible dog owners will have problems with their dogs getting into fights. This is something we just have to accept. The best thing we can do is pay attention to our dogs and watch them at all times. It’s very easy to get lost talking on a cell phone, talking to another dog owner, reading a paper, etc., while our dogs are getting into a potentially dangerous situation. Let’s help each other to remain aware and mindful of our dogs at all times. It doesn’t mean that we can’t talk to each other! Just stay alert.

We are in the process of creating a list serve through Google so that everyone will have the power to post to the group without making their personal e-mail address public. More on this to come.
